For the past 50 years, the mission of the Bechtel Bettis, Inc.
has been to develop advanced Naval nuclear propulsion technology and
provide technical support for the safe and reliable operation of existing
Naval reactors. Bettis designed reactor plants for the first nuclear
powered submarine (USS Nautilus), the first nuclear-powered aircraft
carrier (USS Enterprise), all of the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, and
the USS Seawolf, the latest addition to the fleet and the most capable
nuclear submarine on earth. A major new initiative for the Laboratory is
design of the nuclear propulsion plants and electrical power systems for
the next class of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. This effort, along with
Bettis' existing work load, will provide meaningful and challenging
opportunities will into the 21st century. The Laboratory's main site is
located 12 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia but it also has
facilities in Idaho Falls, Idaho and Charleston, South Carolina. Bettis is
operated for the Department of Energy by Bechtel Bettis, Inc. All
candidates must be U.S. citizens. Applicants selected will be subject to a
Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for
access to classified matter.
