Our Services
"In the new Waste Management, everything starts with the customer." - Maury Myers, Chairman, CEO and President.
While the Company is large in scale, Waste Management tailors its customer services to the local community in order to better serve our customers and respond to their needs as quickly as possible. Waste Management makes a total commitment to environmental compliance, ensuring its customers that their wastes will be managed safely, in compliance with laws and regulations and, most important, in a manner protective of the public's health and natural resources.
Waste Removal
Waste Management's commitment to the customer begins with a vast waste removal network. Nationwide, the emphasis of our waste removal business is on commercial, residential, and industrial solid waste. In many areas, we integrate the waste removal and disposal operations, directing waste to our own landfills. This ensures the solid waste we collect is disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. We also work to keep decision-making and controls at regional and local levels, making us more responsive and more competitive at the point of service. This responsibility, in the hands of individuals with decades of operating experience, enhances our ability to offer low-cost, high-quality waste removal services to every customer, regardless of size.
Disposal Operations and Services
Access to a disposal facility such as a landfill is a necessity for all solid waste management companies. With the largest network of landfills in the industry, Waste Management utilizes state-of-the-art liners, leachate collection, ground water monitoring, and gas control systems, along with operational procedures that ensure a pristine environment. Designed and operated under highly regulated and prescribed procedures, each facility is engineered to protect surface and ground water through the highest environmental control. Each site is maintained carefully to meet or exceed federal, state, and local regulations. Of the 284 landfills owned or operated by Waste Management, the average remaining life is approximately 18 years.
Recycling
Our recycling programs include curbside collection of recyclable materials from residential customers, as well as commercial and industrial collection. We also broker the sale of recycled materials in bulk to the end-users of such materials. At Waste Management, we seek to develop recycling programs that complement a responsible, comprehensive and cost-effective plan to manage the entire waste stream.
Transfer Stations With the large volume of solid waste generated from urban markets, it is often not feasible or economical to transport waste directly from the collection point to the landfill, which is usually situated some distance away from the generation point. In these instances, Waste Management has transfer stations strategically located to accept waste from collection trucks. At these transfer stations, waste is consolidated, compacted and loaded into long-haul trailers for transport to landfills. This operation improves the utilization of collection equipment by minimizing transportation time and efficiently moving large volumes of waste to our disposal sites. With most of the waste we collect going into our own landfills, our supporting network of transfer stations and hauling operations provides the important link for the efficient disposal of waste within a radius of 100 miles or more, from both urban and rural markets.

Wheelabrator Technologies
Wheelabrator Technologies provides an array of environmental services throughout North America, which includes the conversion of municipal solid waste into steam and electricity. Every day, our 16 waste-to-energy facilities create over 670 megawatts of electric generating capacity and dispose of 24,000 tons of trash. Each ton is the energy equivalent of one and one-third barrels of oil. Since 1975, Wheelabrator has displaced over 90 million barrels of oil and has recycled well over one million tons of scrap metal while surpassing the strictest regulatory requirements in the country. We also convert biosolids (produced from the treatment of wastewater) into useful fertilizers and recycle organic wastes into compost materials for agricultural purposes.
Industrial Services
Our Industrial Services Group provides specialized collection, transportation and disposal services to customers in a wide range of industries, including oil and gas, petrochemical, automotive, manufacturing and technology. For many customers, we provide daily on-site management of waste programs, with a Waste Management representative dedicated to working at the customer's location to develop and implement turnkey consolidated waste services, from collection, recycling and disposal, to hazardous waste disposal, incineration and fuels blending operations.
