
The Pines Residential Treatment Centers have been helping children and adolescents overcome a variety of difficulties in a therapeutic, safe and structured residential environment. We offer several distinct residential programs for youth ages 5 to 21 and have emerged as one of the largest and strongest treatment organizations for behaviorally disordered youth. The Pines is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and is licensed by the Office of Interdepartmental Regulations (CORE) in Virginia. Our Child and Adolescent Programs are Tri-care certified, and our educational programs are accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Educational Facilities (VAISEF).
The Brighton Center, located in Portsmouth, VA
The Behavioral Studies Program for Boys
This innovative program addresses the issues of delinquency, sex offending and mental health using a holistic trauma informed approach to cure within a robust multi-cultural treatment model. Located on the Pines Residential Treatment Center's 30-acre Brighton Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, the program works with sexual abusive offending adolescent males between the ages 11 and 21.
Project Right Track
Located on the Brighton Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, Project Right Track provides intensive treatment to sexually abusive adolescent males diagnosed with mental retardation and psychiatric illnesses or disorders. Project Right Track serves male juvenile sex offenders between the ages of 12 and 20.
The Cooperative Living Program - Boys
The Cooperative Living Program, developed for youth with developmental disabilities, emotional, behavioral and psychiatric disorders, is a structured therapeutic environment with 24-hour supervision and special education services for youth aged 12 to 20 who have shown an inability to be maintained safely in a less restrictive environment. Located on The Pines Brighton Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, the program treats emotional, psychiatric and behavioral problems concurrently. The clinical treatment components are based upon Positive Behavior Support principles and philosophies. Interventions are designed to promote positive behavior and interrupt negative behaviors such as aggression, impulsivity and socially maladaptive interactions.

The Young Men's Center
Youth placed in the Young Men's Center are referred by family, social services departments, court services or education agencies because they have demonstrated a need for a structured therapeutic environment with 24-hour supervision. Through their inability to be maintained safely in a less restrictive environment, these resident will participate in a program designed to treat emotional, psychiatric and behavioral problems concurrently. The Young Men's Center serves male youth between the ages of 13 and 18.
The Behavioral Studies Program for Girls
The Behavioral Studies Program for Girls (BSP-G) is a program for adolescent females ages 12 to 17 who have engaged in sexually abusive behavior towards others. These residents often present with co-morbid psychiatric issues including mood, anxiety, trauma-related and substance abuse disorders. They commonly present with antisocial, bipolar, borderline, and narcissistic personality traits.

Visions Program for Girls
The Visions Program is a gender-specific program that provides therapeutic services to hard-to-treat and difficult to place young women ages 12 to 17. The levels of disconnectedness, distrust, and aggression exhibited by these girls often result in failed placements, school suspensions, unhealthy relationships, and criminal charges. Such behavioral outcomes, couples with psychiatric diagnoses render these young women a treatment challenge.
Visions addresses issues uniquely experienced by girls, including self-esteem, body image, parenting, powerlessness, domestic violence, rape and other trauma. The program teaches residents to recognize and replace problem-causing and self-destructive behaviors with socially appropriate skills sets. Behavioral and relational/cultural therapies provide the psychological underpinnings for the program. Life and vocational skills are incorporated throughout the program.
The WINGS Program
The WINGS Program (Women In Need of Guidance and Support) is a gender-specific, structured program that specifically addresses impulse control problems exhibited by adolescent females. This program is designed for adolescent females between the ages of 13-17 with a history of treatment failures at various levels of care.
The WINGS Program responds to the need for gender specific programming. Girls with disorders of affect, self-destructive behaviors and aggression often present with different clinical pictures than boys with similar behavioral disorders. The WINGS Program provides treatment specific to the unique difficulties and etiology related to girls.
The Young Women's Center
The Young Women's Center provides gender specific, structured and nurturing treatment to adolescent girls with psychiatric diagnoses combined with behavioral problems. Designed to be holistic by integrating the mind, body and spirit, the Young Women's Center incorporates traditional therapeutic and holistic interventions that integrate the mind, body, and spirit by utilizing meditation and expressive therapies for relaxation. The Young Women's Center is passionate about providing an environment for young women to heal and flourish.
Many of the residents of the Young Women's Center have experienced trauma, such as the loss of a caregiver, multiple foster placements, abandonment, and physical and/or sexual abuse. Young women developing in abusive and violent environments generally experience overwhelming feelings of rejection, of being unlovable and unloved. The program carefully combines group and individual therapies with a strong educational and recreational program to enhance the treatment of the "whole person."

The Adolescent Program
This comprehensive mental health program provides psychiatrically and medically managed residential treatment for emotionally disturbed youth. Located on the Kempsville Center in Norfolk, Virginia, the Adolescent Program is Tri-Care approved and serves male and female residents ages 13 - 18.
The Child Program
For the youngest children, this program provides a therapeutic and safe setting to address comprehensive mental health needs. The program provides psychiatrically and medically managed residential treatment for emotionally disturbed youth. Located on the Kempsville Center in Norfolk, VA the Child Program serves male and female residents ages 5-12.
