Why change the name?
We’ve spent the last two years growing and refining the positioning of the network. We’ve added more best-in-class events like the Dakar Rally and the America’s Cup, we’ve expanded our programming, including our originals, as well as the acquisition of Survivor, and we have focused on the inherent competition that weaves across all of our genres. No matter the contenders, there is less of an outdoor filter and more of a competition filter. While the outdoors will continue to be an important part of this network and a focal point, we didn’t want to exclude other programming.

Why VERSUS?
This was the culmination of a two-year network evolution. It was chosen not only because it is bold, but because it universally evokes competition. VERSUS is part of the lexicon of competition and will celebrate competition in all its forms.
VERSUS is immediate shorthand for competition and has a range that can suit everything from stick and ball sports, to bull riding, to field sports. In focus group after focus group, it was the name that consistently rose to the top. Sports fans felt it was not only strong, but that it conveyed an idea and an energy that suggests a network experience centered on competition.

Why not “VS.”?
VERSUS spelled out actually tested extremely well. We will be using VS. as a secondary mark and in listings, etc.

How did you come up with the name?
The network began soliciting name suggestions – both internally and externally – about a year ago. After sifting through hundreds of potential ideas, OLN began rigorously testing those the network felt had potential. VERSUS was the name that consistently rose to the top in focus group after focus group. Sports fans felt it was not only strong, but that it conveyed an idea and an energy that suggests a network experience centered on competition.

How does field sports fit in?
Hunting and angling requires patience, skill and dedication. Sportsman must be unwavering in their commitment and diligent in their pursuit of knowledge – both of their subjects as well as their environment. They must also be willing to face extreme and unfamiliar elements – often for extended and arduous lengths of time. Time in the field or on the water can be absolutely grueling. The competition is the innate internal struggle that comes from braving these elements and having the resolve, in the end, to take that elusive whitetail or land that bluefin tuna if given the opportunity.

VERSUS will continue to present the best hosts, the best producers and the best partners in the business and feature programming that illustrates the innate competitiveness involved in chasing a bobwhite quail or landing a bigeye tuna.
