Synopsys was founded in December 1986 when a group of six engineers at General Electric's Microelectronics Center, headed by Dr. Aart J. de Geus, received GE's blessing and a loan of $250,000 to productize the logic synthesis technology they had developed. The company was the first to successfully commercialize logic synthesis, and today the company holds a commanding lead in the worldwide synthesis market. Since then, Synopsys has significantly expanded its product line to meet the demanding needs of its customer base for high-level design. In addition, Synopsys has acquired or merged with a number of smaller, highly innovative companies that extend the total solution for Synopsys customers.

In the company's early years, successfully developing and commercializing logic synthesis brought the company from seed funding and nine employees to $22 million in revenue and 138 employees (fiscal year 1990). After introducing test synthesis and the VHDL simulator, Synopsys grew to $40.5 million in revenue and 229 employees (fiscal year 1991). In the last three and a half years, the company expanded its product line of high-level design tools and added leading-edge technology. Fiscal year 1996, ended September 30, 1996, revenues were $353.5 million. The company now has over 2,100 employees.
