Southwest Research Institute

Overview

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is a nonprofit, applied engineering and physical sciences research and development organization with a mission to advance the general welfare of people through science and technology. In providing more than 50 years of service to the scientific and engineering community, the Institute has been granted more than 2,000 patents. Revenues from contract research in fiscal year 1998 totaled more than $300 million, an increase of nearly 33.5 million over fiscal year 1997 revenues.

SwRI occupies 1,200 acres within the city limits of San Antonio, Texas. Approximately 2,600 employees work in almost than 2 million square feet of laboratories, offices, and workshops. SwRI is independent, impartial, and not affiliated with any government agency, educational institution, or corporate entity, nor does it endorse products or services.

SwRI is operated by an executive staff comprising a president, an executive vice president, and 11 divisional and administrative vice presidents. It is governed by an uncompensated board of directors and trustees.

SwRI conducts R&D projects for an even mix of private industries and government agencies. Industrial clients range from small manufacturers to blue chip corporations, in the U.S. and abroad. A wide range of technical competencies and breadth allow Southwest Research Institute to assemble a multidisciplinary team of experts required by any technical project, giving SwRI a teaming flexibility difficult to find at other R&D organizations. Institute staff members have expertise in such areas as:

  • Automation, Robotics, and Intelligent Systems
