In 1953, the prototype of the first Sonic Drive-In opened in Shawnee, Okla. More than 47 years and more than 2,200 drive-ins later, Sonic enjoys the highest customer frequency rate in the quick-service restaurant industry. Sonic Corp. is an Oklahoma City-based, publicly held company that owns, operates and franchises restaurants (NASDAQ: SONC). Today, Cliff Hudson is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of this billion-dollar public company.
One of the unique features of Sonic is the Carhop, a member of the Sonic crew who delivers food directly to customers' cars. Today's Sonic Drive-In menu harkens back to its beginning, featuring made-to-order favorites such as hamburgers, French fries, malts and shakes. Sonic also features signature menu items such as Extra-Long Cheese Coneys, made-fresh-daily Onion Rings, Tater Tots, Fountain Favorite® specialty drinks including Cherry Limeades, slushes, Flurry blended floats, and a Frozen Favorites® full dessert menu. Sonic is the nation's largest chain of drive-in fast-food restaurants with drive-ins located in 28 states from coast-to-coast. Sonic's made-to-order fast food, combined with value-added monthly combo specials, and the use of Carhops, pushed Sonic's total system-wide restaurant sales to exceed $1.7 billion in fiscal year 2000. In the 1950s, Sonic's unique use of curbside speakers to allow customers to place food orders without ever leaving their cars, spawned the slogan "Sonic, Service with the Speed of Sound." In recent years, that slogan has been replaced with "Sonic, America's Drive-In." Sonic was founded by Troy Smith and was originally named Top Hat Drive-In, the name was changed to Sonic in 1959. In addition to having the highest customer frequency rate in the hamburger segment of the quick service restaurant industry, Sonic's honor roll of achievements also includes the following national recognitions:
Restaurant Business magazine (May 2001)
Entrepreneur magazine (January 2001)
Restaurants & Institutions Annual Choice in Chains Award (Burger Segment)
