The Starbucks Story In 1971, an unassuming little coffee shop opened in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market. More than thirty years and millions of lattes later, that neighborhood hangout has grown into one of the world’s largest and most recognizable brands. Starbucks has become synonymous with the highest quality coffee, a welcoming environment, personalized service and a passion for innovation. Starbucks continues to grow, and with over 13,000 locations, people all over the world can now enjoy the Starbucks Experience. What does Starbucks Coffee Company do? Today Starbucks is known the world over for many things, but let’s begin by taking a look at what started it all - our retail stores. Here, customers can enjoy a relaxing atmosphere and purchase the high-quality whole bean coffees that we roast, customized beverages, food offerings, and other coffee-related merchandise. Beyond our stores, we sell our whole bean coffees in supermarkets, and we produce and sell the bottled Frappuccino® coffee drink, a line of premium ice creams, a specialty liqueur, EthosTM water, and a line of premium Tazo® teas. Starbucks Entertainment brings a diverse selection of music, film, literature and art to our customers. At Starbucks, we’re always looking for innovative and exciting ways to extend the coffeehouse experience. What is Starbucks all about? At Starbucks, we never take our success for granted and we continually challenge ourselves to be a company that does business differently than any other company. For starters, Starbucks is currently the largest purchaser of Fair Trade CertifiedTM coffee in North America. In addition, we offer our Black Apron ExclusivesTM which provide farmers with cash awards. And since we are dedicated to making a positive impact on the communities in which we source our coffee, by 2013 Starbucks intends to purchase 80 percent of our coffee from verified C.A.F.E. Practices suppliers. We grow stronger and continue to expand, but never lose sight of the impact we have on our world. Through our commitment to conducting business in a socially and environmentally responsible manner, we donated over $36 million to charities and nonprofit organizations worldwide in 2006. In addition, our Ethos Water Fund has initiated clean-water projects in Indonesia, Ethiopia, India, and Kenya.
