In 1960 Dr. Henry Singleton and Dr. George Kozmetsky formed a company called Teledyne. Loosely translated, Teledyne means Power Through Communication. Teledyne was formed to capitalize on the coming revolution in which digital technology would replace analog devices and systems in everything we could touch and imagine. Teledyne has evolved considerably over the years. Today, Teledyne Technologies includes a focused set of complementary, high-tech businesses. Teledyne Technologies provides broadband communication products, such as traveling wave tubes and solid state microwave power amplifiers, switches and filters used in voice, video and data communication on earth and via satellites. As a leading provider of airborne telephony systems for business and commuter aircraft, we allow travelers always to be in touch. When communication is critical, customers rely on Teledyne Technologies. Our broadband power amplifiers, which enable live news broadcasting, have become the standard in long-life performance for commercial satellite uplinks. In addition, our high-power traveling wave tubes used in radar systems and military satellite communication are found on nearly all major defense platforms of the United States and its allies throughout the world. We also make commercial aviation safer by developing and manufacturing systems, which monitor and report critical conditions affecting airlines and airport operations.
Mission Critical Applications
We are engaged in R&D leading to radically new techniques for safely destroying chemical weapons, an effort closely related to our role as the prime contractor for all non-stockpile chemical demilitarization and chemical weapons destruction for the U.S. Army. We developed the first gas turbine engine used to power a modern, high technology missile -- the US Navy's Harpoon weapon system. We also make high precision castings for the harpoon missile as well as for military and commercial aircraft. We produce electronics for other applications, such as life sustaining medical implants. For example, we produce hybrid circuits and multi-chip modules used in cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators. Corporate HistoryTeledyne Technologies Incorporated was organized as a Delaware corporation on August 23, 1999. We are comprised of certain businesses of the former Aerospace and Electronics segment of Allegheny Teledyne Incorporated (now known as Allegheny Technologies Incorporated)("ATI"). On November 29, 1999, we spun off from ATI after a strategic review concluded that as a separate company our businesses would be able to grow faster and we would be more competitive. While our origins can be traced to Teledyne, Inc., founded in 1960 by Dr. Henry Singleton, we are not that company or Teledyne Industries, Inc. Some of our operating subsidiaries include: Electronics and Communications Segment:
Teledyne Continental Motors has been recognized as a world leader in the development of general aviation engines for over 70 years. Whenever breakthroughs in general aviation were made, we were there. We were the first to introduce the horizontally opposed cylinder configuration to help increase aircraft speeds and the first to introduce both fuel injection and turbocharging in general aviation aircraft. Our engines set world altitude records for manned piston aircraft and we supplied the engine for the Voyager aircraft, which successfully circumnavigated the globe without refueling in 1986. Currently, we are in the process of certifying full authority to digital electronic controls for piston powered general aviation aircraft. We are also working with NASA on the development of a revolutionary engine for the general aviation market. |
