For over a century, R.H. Donnelley has been in the business of directory advertising, publishing, and marketing. From the time of its founding in 1886 by Reuben Hamilton Donnelley, the company has been an innovator in the specialized field of telephone directory sales. R.H. Donnelley's creative strategy to publish the first telephone directory with classified advertising in Chicago led to its recognition as an important advertising medium. Donnelley, in "The Red Book," was first to introduce the yellow pages concept of bringing buyers and sellers together via advertising units in a telephone directory.

In the early 1900s, RHD expanded its operations to Cincinnati and New York, and in 1917 moved its headquarters to New York City. During the 1930s and 1940s, the company extended its sales and service capabilities to other urban areas. In 1961, RHD merged with Dun & Bradstreet, in a long beneficial relationship that ended with RHD's separation as an independent public company on July 1, 1998.

RHD proved itself an innovator during the high-growth years of the 1970s and 1980s, implementing such product improvements as two-color and four-color ads, coupon advertising, large display units, business-to-business yellow pages, neighborhood directories, street address directories and specialty directories. Many other innovations were to follow, including yellow pages TV advertising and Internet services.

Today, R.H. Donnelley is the largest independent marketer in the U.S. of Yellow Pages advertising, serving customers through print phone directories and online, audiotex and broadcast media. It is using the newest technologies, training systems, marketing techniques and publishing systems to enhance its directory products and those of its clients and partners to serve customers better in the highly competitive yellow pages environment.
