Who We Are
An Enduring Mission and Distinguished History
Montefiore Medical Center's mission is to heal, to teach, to discover and to advance the health of the communities we serve. Established in 1884 as a hospital for patients with chronic illnesses, our history is rich with pioneering medical firsts and research, as well as an exceptional dedication to the community. As a major academic medical center, Montefiore builds excellence with top physicians, extraordinary nurses and devoted staff who deliver seamless, coordinated care to millions of residents in the New York metropolitan region and beyond.
Partnering Science and Medicine
As the University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine Montefiore provides extensive clinical education, training programs and graduate medical education. This partnership focuses on advancing clinical and translational research to accelerate the pace at which new discoveries become the treatments and therapies that benefit patients. Montefiore and Einstein are among 38 academic medical centers nationwide to be awarded a prestigious Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) by the National Institutes of Health.
Innovative Centers of Excellence
At the intersection of Einstein science and Montefiore medicine are Centers of Excellence in cancer care, cardiovascular services, pediatrics, transplantation and neurosciences where nationally recognized investigators and multidisciplinary clinical teams collaborate to develop and deliver advanced, innovative care.
Seamless Care
Through our multidisciplinary approach to healthcare, Montefiore provides access to a wide variety of medical specialties for a full range of clinical services. This unique team approach brings together the work of physicians, nurses and other care providers across multiple specialties to ensure that our patients receive comprehensive, personalized care at any of our Montefiore locations.
Our hospitals provide more than 93,000 inpatient stays every year, including approximately 7,000 births. Montefiore receives more than 2.5 million visits annually at more than 100 locations providing ambulatory care in the Bronx and Westchester.
A Longstanding Commitment to the Community
Montefiore is distinguished among academic medical centers for its unwavering commitment to community service, leading to a major expansion of health services in the Bronx. This includes providing easier access to healthcare through innovative solutions such as our School Health Program—the first of its kind in the nation—mobile vans, home-visiting doctors and additional sites in underserved neighborhoods. We offer a wide range of services targeted to specific groups in need including the young, the elderly, those living with chronic diseases and HIV, the mentally ill and those struggling with substance use and homelessness.
Montefiore has developed long-standing partnerships with community organizations to offer support for those in need of special services and collaborated with other providers in the region to better manage the care of patients who move through multiple systems. We've fostered the growth of innovative community-based programs that impact health and wellness such as the Farmer's Market held in our gardens, and smoking cessation and exercise initiatives throughout our community.
Montefiore has served for nearly 30 years as a force for neighborhood preservation and pride through the efforts of the Mosholu Preservation Corporation.
