Organon was founded in 1923 and is now a business unit of the Pharma division of Akzo Nobel NV, a multinational company based in The Netherlands. Akzo Nobel produces and markets health care products, coatings, chemicals, and fibers.

The health care products group, Pharma, consists of four business units in addition to Organon-Organon Teknika, Intervet, Diosynth, and Chefaro. These other four Pharma companies produce hospital supplies, diagnostics, veterinary products, raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry, and nonprescription medications. Today, Organon has nearly 10,000 employees and subsidiaries in 50 countries. The United States operation of Organon is based in West Orange, New Jersey.
