The Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund (MAIF) was created by the Maryland State Legislature in 1972 for the purpose of providing automobile liability insurance to State of Maryland residents who are unable to obtain it elsewhere in the private insurance market. MAIF is an independent agency of the State of Maryland, and as such, reports directly to the Governor and is responsible to the Maryland State Legislature. Operating funds for MAIF are received from the insurance premiums written with MAIF. MAIF receives no State funding and any debts or obligations of the Fund cannot be deemed to be debts of the State of Maryland. MAIF is advised by a Board of Trustees. Seven board members are appointed by the Governor and five are chosen by the insurance industry. The Executive Director is also a member of the Board of Trustees and oversees the day to day operations of the Fund. MAIF has approximately 525 employees and is comprised of the following departments: Executive, Human Resources, Administration, Claims, Underwriting, Fiscal, and Information Systems. Our main office is located in Annapolis, and our House Counsel office is located in downtown Baltimore. We also have several Damage Assessment Centers located throughout the State. Benefits of Working at MAIF MAIF employees are eligible for State of Maryland employee benefits. These fringe benefits are worth approximately 40-45% of the employee's base salary. New employees earn ten days of vacation leave each year. Vacation leave earnings increase as of the sixth year of employment. Employees receive six days of personal leave per year and fifteen days of sick leave per year. MAIF employees enjoy eleven paid holidays per year, plus Election Day in even numbered years. Employees become members of the State of Maryland Pension System as of their first day of work. Employees contribute 2% of their pre-tax income to the Pension System and are vested after just five years. Employees may also choose to join the 401(k) Savings and Investment Plan and/or the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan as of their first day of work, or any time thereafter. Employees may enroll themselves and eligible dependents in various health insurance, life insurance, and disability insurance benefit plans as of their first day of work. MAIF pays approximately 85% of the health insurance premium. MAIF strongly encourages employees to take advantage of training and learning opportunities. College courses, seminars, training courses, workshops, etc. are available to employees and may be paid for by MAIF. MAIF fully supports the State of Maryland Teleworking Program by allowing eligible employees to work from a home office two or three days a week. To be considered for this program, employees must be employed by MAIF for at least six months, be considered by management to be self-motivated, and be in a position that MAIF has identified as appropriate for teleworking. Smoking is not allowed in any owned or leased MAIF buildings and company vehicles. |
