A Brief History

Lowell General Hospital is an independent, not-for-profit, community hospital serving the Greater Lowell area and surrounding communities. Located on the former Fay Estate in Lowell, the hospital was organized and incorporated in 1891. Today, LGH encompasses ten buildings, the latest state-of-the-art technology and a full range of medical and surgical services for patients, from newborns to seniors.

The hospital has 200 licensed beds, 38 bassinets, a 21-bed Transitional Care Unit and two satellite locations including The Surgery Center and Patient Services Center at Drum Hill and the Women's Imaging Center in Chelmsford.

As the area's most trusted hospital, Lowell General is committed to the health of our community, providing a complete family of services including:

  • The Cancer Center at Lowell General, providing full cancer care services and support in collaboration with Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare in Boston.
  • The Regional Cardiac Center which includes a catheterization laboratory, an electrophysiology program in clinical collaboration with Lahey Clinic's Electrophysiology specialists, the area's only EECP therapy program and Cardiac Rehabilitation.
  • Specialized Ciritical Care services including an Intensive Care Unit and Intermediate Care Unit.
  • Emergency Department available around the clock
  • Maternity Services including The Birthplace, parent and family/childbirth education, lactation services, and the area's only
  • Special Care Nursery for seriously ill and premature newborns. Our specialized prenatal clinic for high-risk babies is in affiliation with the New England Medical Center (NEMC).
  • Pediatric Services including The Children's Place, a child and adolescent unit specially designed for for the needs of our young patients and their families during hospitalization; and outpatient specialty clinics in affiliation with NEMC's Floating Hospital for Children, helping children with conditions involving genetics, pulmonology, gastroenterology and pediatric cardiology.
  • Women's Services including The Women's Imaging Center in Chelmsford and on the hospital campus, providing quick and easy access to mammography, breast ultrasound, and bone density testing
  • Complete surgical services including general, orthopedic, and vascular surgery, with 24-hour on-site anethesiology. The Surgery Center at Drum Hill provides a convenient alternative for same-day surgery.
  • A Pain Management Center for the treatment of acute, chronic, and cancer-related pain
  • Sleep Lab and Neurodiagnostic Center for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep problems.
  • Complete Laboratory and Radiology Services, a full range of Diagnostic Services, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and ultra-fast CT Scanning
  • A 21-bed Transitional Care Unit
  • Inpatient and outpatient Nutrition Services, complemented by our Room Service meals
  • Free or low-cost Community Education Programs, screenings and classes
  • Patient Advocacy Program to support patients from admission through post-discharge
