LEGO Systems, Inc.

LEGO just imagine ...

The global LEGO Company was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen in Billund, Denmark and is one of the world's largest toy manufacturers, employing approximately 9,000 employees in six continents. He named his toy company LEGO from a combination of two Danish words "leg" and "godt" meaning "play well". Coincidentally, "LEGO" means "I put together" in Latin.

LEGO toys were not sold in the United States and Canada until 1961. From 1961 to 1973, LEGO products were sold in the U.S. on a limited basis through a licensing agreement with the Samsonite Corporation. In 1973, the LEGO company established an American sales company, LEGO Systems, Inc., in Brookfield, CT.

The company moved to Enfield, CT in 1975 to begin manufacturing. Today, manufacturing, distribution, marketing and sales for LEGO business in the Americas (North America and Latin America) are handled from the 203-acre Enfield site.

Because LEGO Systems, Inc. is a privately-held company, no financial data is released to the public.

LEGO Systems, Inc. has steadily increased production to nearly 2.7 billion LEGO elements each year, approximately half of the product needed for the Americas. The company packages approximately 65% of the sets sold to the Americas.

The LEGO Company employs more than 2,000 people in the North America and Latin America. In the U.S., the company has increased office, manufacturing and distribution space to 1.2 million square feet. The Enfield campus also houses the LEGO Creative Child Care Center for 122 children of employees and members of the local community.
