History

In 1928, in the small town of Monroe, Mich., cousins Edward M. Knabusch and Edwin J. Shoemaker partnered and invested in the furniture business. Together, the duo created a unique chair designed for "nature's way of relaxing." A comfortable concept, this reclining wood-slat porch chair followed the contour of a person's body, both sitting up and leaning back. Using orange crates to mock-up and refine their idea, they invented the reclining mechanism that would sweep the world off its feet. In 1929, "the two Eds" upholstered their innovation and marketed it as a year-round chair. They named the chair and ultimately the company, La-Z-Boy.

In 1961, La-Z-Boy revolutionized reclining with the introduction of the Reclina-Rocker®. Then in 1969, after years as primarily a recliner manufacturer, La-Z-Boy turned its focus toward designing motion products including reclining sofas, sleep sofas and modular groups. In 1983, La-Z-Boy introduced its first line of stationary sofas and occasional chairs.

Today La-Z-Boy offers consumers a wide variety of upholstered and stationary furniture for any taste and style and is North America's largest single manufacturer of upholstered furniture and the world's leading producer of reclining chairs. La-Z-Boy has a 98 percent consumer awareness rating (La-Z-Boy Image and Awareness Study, 2002) and is consistently rated as the favorite furniture brand of consumers, and one of the top 10 brands in the home (HFN Top 150 Home Product Brands, Sept. 11, 2006).
