For nearly 60 years, the name Kaiser Permanente has stood for excellence in health care services. Today, over 8 million people in nine states and the District of Columbia entrust their care to Kaiser Permanente, making us the largest nonprofit health care organization in the United States. In a single year, we schedule more than 30 million outpatient visits, deliver 87,000 babies, and fill about 53 million prescriptions, thanks to the dedication of some 130,000 employees and physicians. We are driven by the needs of our members and our responsibility to the many communities we serve. As a nonprofit organization, our physicians and staff are focused on the delivery of high-quality health care and services, rather than short-term stockholder demands. At Kaiser Permanente, our emphasis is on improving the quality of care we provide to our patients and creating a positive environment for our health care professionals. Our employees enjoy the advantages of a supportive work culture, substantial compensation and benefits, and excellent opportunities for professional growth. Kaiser Permanente has received a number of important regional and national awards. Recently, we were named one of the "World's Most Respected Companies" by The Financial Times and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Kaiser Permanente, the only listed organization that provides direct patient care, ranked seventh in the health care category. It was one of only four companies on the health care list based in the United States. Kaiser Permanente has also received recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), the nation's leading reviewer of health plan quality. Kaiser Permanente in Northern California was one of the few HMOs in California to earn the top rating of "Excellent," which means that we satisfied or surpassed NCQA's strict evaluation criteria in areas such as preventive care, member services, physician credentialing, and improvements in care delivery. Kaiser Permanente in Southern California also received the Excellent accreditation. Additionally, Kaiser Permanente Colorado was ranked among the Top 15 Health Plans in a National Quality Report by the NCQA (the only Colorado health plan listed). Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States leads the region in Clinical Care and Prevention Measures in the NCQA's annual Quality Care Survey. All Kaiser Foundation Hospitals in California have been accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the hospital industry's leading accreditation agency. Reflecting our commitment to the practice of evidence-based medicine, Kaiser Permanente maintains the largest non-academic research institute in the United States. The Division of Research, based in Oakland, California, employs 400 staff members engaged in more than 220 research projects with funding in excess of $30 million. Research is directed at improving methods for delivery of health care, improving outcomes in the treatment of diseases such as heart disease and cancer, and expanding our understanding of mental health, women's health, children's health, and other key areas. The Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit Program is one of the largest health care community benefit or philanthropic ventures in the nation. In 2002, we began the process of organizing our Community Benefit Program to focus on: health care financing and delivery to vulnerable populations, evidence-based medicine, the education of health care professionals and consumers, and national public health policy. One of Kaiser Permanente's longest running Community Benefit programs is the Educational Theatre Program. More than 6.5 million people have attended ETP performances since they began 15 years ago. The theatrical presentations address topics such as substance abuse, self-esteem, alternatives to violence, HIV prevention, and grief and coping skills. Performances, which are free of charge, are presented at schools and are often open to the public. Resource materials for students, teachers, and parents reinforce the health messages in each production. Kaiser Permanente has long been a leader in providing quality health care and services to diverse populations. Under the direction of its National Diversity Council, the organization has become a leader in advancing culturally competent care-- health care that acknowledges cultural diversity in the clinical setting, respects members' beliefs and practices, and ensures that cultural needs are considered and respected at every point of contact. The Kaiser Permanente Diversity Conference is the organization's longest- running conference - 29 years and counting. Through its Institute for Culturally Competent Care, Kaiser Permanente has established "Centers of Excellence," innovative clinical models that respond to the health needs of specific populations. The San Francisco Center of Excellence provides language-specific primary care medical clinics in Spanish and Chinese, as well as on-site services by interpreters proficient in other languages and dialects. A Center of Excellence focusing on the African-American population has been established at Kaiser Permanente's West Los Angeles Medical Center. The Center focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of conditions especially prevalent among African Americans: sickle cell disease, congestive heart failure, and prostate cancer. Similarly, we have established a Latino Center of Excellence in the Colorado Region based on a multi-pronged approach to culturally competent care. La Clinica de la Familia, the clinical component, provides primary care through a bilingual family practice and addresses the specific health needs of the Region's Latino membership. The expertise and clinical practices developed at Kaiser Permanente's Centers of Excellence result in better quality of care and improved quality of life for people from many different backgrounds and cultures. Kaiser Permanente's philosophy of preventive care, pioneered nearly 60 years ago, has helped to change the way medicine is practiced today. We continue to be innovators in care management and the implementation of information technology to enhance personalized care. Our public education programs increase awareness and promote prevention of disease in our communities. We've also improved access to health care for under-served populations and the services we provide to disabled members. Kaiser Permanente is making an important contribution to the treatment of chronic conditions, which account for nearly 60 percent of all medical costs in the United States. Our experience in providing comprehensive, integrated care to millions of Americans has provided the knowledge base to pioneer the most effective methods for treating chronic conditions. To make the most of our capabilities, Kaiser Permanente established the Care Management Institute to complement and extend the expertise and successful practices found in medical offices and hospitals across the organization. CMI provides an integrated, evidence-based approach to disease management unmatched by any other organization in quality and breadth - CMI's disease management efforts have touched and helped to improve the quality of thousands of people's lives. Kaiser Permanente conducts ongoing research to advance medical knowledge and pave the way to effective new treatments and therapies. Among the many research projects at Kaiser Permanente in 2001-2002 was a study of teens at high risk for depression. The study showed that brief cognitive behavioral therapy can prevent a depressive episode. Kaiser Permanente also conducted a major national clinical trial that found that diet and exercise can sharply lower the chances of getting type 2 diabetes. Our efforts to shape the nation's health care policy provide another avenue to leadership within the health care industry. Kaiser Permanente's Institute for Health Policy works with foundations, policy institutes, research programs, policymakers, and other organizations to develop unbiased information about policy alternatives and their operational implications. The Institute has played an active role in advancing national patient safety policies that reduce medical and system errors. We are viewed as an important voice on patient safety issues. Through its broad research agenda, public policy activities, and care management efforts, Kaiser Permanente plays an important role in identifying the most effective clinical approaches and charting the future direction of health care delivery in the U.S. and the world.
