Hexcel Corporation is the global industry leader in manufacturing and marketing advanced composite materials. The company started in the founder's basement in Lafayette, CA and celebrated our 50th year in business in 1998.

The foundation for Hexcel's leadership in advanced composite materials is vertical Integration. We are the only suppliers in the industry that can draw on the full array of composite technologies to engineer the right solution to our clients' unique performance needs. From carbon fiber precursor to ready-to-install aircraft components, we manufacture at every stage in the composites value-added process. At every point in this chain, we produce materials that are either sold directly to customers or transferred to our more advanced operations. Hexcel today offers a breadth and depth of products and services that is unmatched in the industry. We now manufacture at our facilities worldwide the full spectrum of advanced material solutions-everything from structural fiber and reinforcement fabrics to pre-impregnated materials (or "prepegs") and honeycomb core to finished aircraft structures and interiors.

Hexcel Today
Today, Hexcel consumes about 25% of its own fiber, fabric and composite material production internally. The balance is sold into the various markets in which we compete, ensuring that our entire product line is exposed to market forces spurring innovation and cost-competitive production.

As the only vertically integrated supplier in the industry, Hexcel is better able to control the cost, quality and delivery of its products. Vertical integration also means that we can offer enhanced design flexibility and support to our customers worldwide.

Hexcel's research and technology function supports our businesses worldwide with a highly developed expertise in materials science, textiles, process engineering and plymer chemistry. R&T also performs contract research for customers in the US and Europe. A committee of managers from each of Hexcel's business coordinates worldwide investment in R&T.

Three Business Sectors:

Fibers and Fabrics
Hexcel's carbon fibers, woven structural fabrics and reinforcement materials are used as the foundation in making many composite materials. And composite are used in a wide variety of other applications, from laptop computers and cellular telephones to decorative window treatments.

Composite Materials
Hexcel honeycomb, our first product, was developed 50 years ago. Hexcel materials have boosted the US space program since its early days, and Hexcel honeycomb was the first material from Earth to touch the moon. Today composites support a wide range of commercial and military aircraft, space shuttles and satellites. We no longer put the Hexcel name on snow skis, but Hexcel technology continues to propel world-class athletes in skiing, running, tennis, gold and many other sports. Hexcel composites are used in fast ferries, high speed trains and automobiles, and they help reinforce bridges and buildings against earthquakes.

Engineered Products
If you've traveled on a commercial airliner, you've encountered Hexcel engineered products. These products include a wide range of finished components for the structural airframe and interior of both new and refurbished aircraft. Hexcel interior products include the overhead luggage compartment where you put your bag, the lavatory where you wash up before landing, the aircraft's ceiling, side panels, bulkheads, even the floor you walk on. On the outside of the aircraft, too, Hexcel plays an important role in wing panels, tail sections, engine housing and even the radome (the nose of the plane, where the radar equipment is housed).
