Overview

Is A & P the employer for you? The history and the values we bring to business day-to-day...do they have the same meaning for you that they have for so many people across this country?

If your parents or grandparents grew up in our country, they will tell you that A & P was THE place to shop...they probably still remember the smell of fresh coffee as you walked in the door...

YESTERDAY

In lower Manhattan, The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company began as a mail-order business called the Great American Tea Company. George F. Gilman and George Huntington Hartford were fascinated with the clipper ships, which came to New York with their cargos of high priced tea. The two men saw an opportunity to eliminate the middlemen by selling tea at reduced prices right from the dock. Their success grew with their ability to purchase whole cargos of tea and they established their first permanent store-warehouse operation at 31 Vesey Street, in the shadow of what would become the World Trade Center, over a century later.

Hartford’s son, George authored one of A&P's earliest successes, when he discovered that A&P could keep costs down by manufacturing its own products. This philosophy continues today with A&P's successful private label products such as America's Choice, Master Choice, Health Pride and the most popular, Eight O'Clock Coffee whole bean lines. Since 1859, The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company Inc. (A&P) has been fulfilling the shopping needs of families in urban and suburban communities throughout North America with freshness, quality, variety and value.
