ABOUT EMPLOYMENT: Akron Children's Hospital is among the largest Summit County employers with more than 3,000 employees in our system. From the latest practices in specialized pediatric medical care to the smallest details of physical and emotional comfort, Children's Hospital's professionals pride themselves in their dedication to helping children heal. The skill and compassion of our employees was key to our recent recognition as a 2006 NorthCoast 99 award recipient. This annual program honors 99 great workplaces for top talent in Northeast Ohio. The program was developed and is presented by the Employers Resource Council (ERC), northeast Ohio's largest employers' association. ACHIEVING MAGNET STATUS: After undergoing a rigorous application and evaluation process, Akron Children's Hospital is pleased to announce that it has been awarded Magnet recognition status. Children's applied for Magnet recognition status in the fall of 2004, and welcomed Magnet appraisers to its campus Dec. 17-19, 2006. Developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Magnet Recognition Program®distinguishes hospitals with a commitment to nursing excellence and outstanding performance by the entire organization. The road to Magnet recognition status is a lengthy one, but provides qualified hospitals with an extra degree of credibility in the eyes of the community and the healthcare world. The process involves a detailed application process, the input and participation of employees, and an extensive evaluation of the hospital's adherence to "The 14 Forces of Magnetism," a list of standards established by the ANCC. These standards require organizational characteristics such as strong leadership; competitive salaries and benefits; quality of care; and a commitment to the community. Currently, only about 4% of all healthcare organizations in the United States hold Magnet recognition status. "We are thrilled that Children's is now recognized as a Magnet hospital, but our pursuit of excellence is far from over, " said Grace Wakulchik, R.N., MSN, MBA, Children's vice president for patient services and chief nursing officer. "Magnet is a symbol of this hospital's commitment to making excellence a never-ending process. That's what makes Children's a name people can trust."
